My Design Case Studies – and some of the stories behind them:

The director of a Publishing Co. asked me to design an early reader English language storybook for children between 2 years and 4 years of age. From that one project, 15 books were published, 10 are still in print, and the imprint littlepeoplebooks was launched.
A chance meeting with a lecturer at Wolverhampton University who had just purchased a second hand electron microscope, resulted in a design collaboration with Acuity Design of a raised braille lettering system used in helping blind parents to teach their sighted children to read.

A call from Rose Carr, a New Zealand author, led to the design of a group of dinosaur characters and one soft toy …

One Sunday afternoon, I got a call from TV Chef, Rustie who needed some pretty quick design work from me. – a fan club membership system as she had just received seven full postal bags of fan mail. After the success of this and Rustie’s growing popularity, I produced the interior layout designs for her second restaurant in Hurst Street, Birmingham and interior visuals for another in Hill Street.

Following the theft of two paintings from the Birmingham Midland Institute, I was given the opportunity to design a fund-raising art exhibition at Birmingham Botanical Garden.

Out of the blue, Paul Hales, Marine Engineer contacted me, sending details of a ‘Low Flow High Volume’ tidal turbine invention of his that needed promotional design for print and web use. Today, that invention is now in production and could provide the World with all its green-blue sustainable energy for the future.



Book Spread DesignAfter attending a course on snail farming and escargot cuisine, a farmer asked us to research and design a snail farm to include external enclosures. SnailsRus

Having studied aquacultural system design for fish and shellfish, I was brought in to advise on the design of a new fish farm following gravel extraction works.
For the launch of Café Surf, Birmingham’s first internet café, , I designed a series of art wall displays incorporating wire made by the very same company that produced the first transatlantic telephone cable.
A design / Build company commissioned me to re-design the interior and exteriors of a Butlin’s Holiday Camp’s entertainment complex.
A developer contracted me to design the architectural presentation scheme for a new Bar, Restaurant and Golf Club House.
For a large manufacturer of fittings, I collaborated with fellow designer, Martin Hulse, to design a shop conversion and display system for a trade and retail outlet in the Czech Republic.
Given a set of five different building photographs ‘torn from various trade magazines’, I followed a brief to incorporate certain features from each picture to form a totally new building for a major car showroom.

I was surprised to get a call from a new shoe company but loved looking through the latest Italian designs and figuring out a range of design options for slippers you put into the washing machine like any other clothing.
