This is the first book in the "ELF" series of synthetic phonics story books. There are seven levels progressing from red through the spectrum to violet. At the red level complete illustrated stories are produced using only words that can be written with the 22 simplest graphemes ( i.e. hard consonants and short vowels from letters a-w, excluding q). Progressive levels introduce further sounds, letters and combinations as well as irregular words. The books comply with the National Literacy Strategy as modified by the recommendations of the Rose Review.
